Te Ahu o te Reo Māori represents the Government's commitment to strengthen and grow an education workforce that can integrate te reo Māori into the learning of all ākonga in Aotearoa by 2025.

Delivery overview

  • Delivered by Ngā Papatipu Marae in association with Te Rūnanga o Ngai Tahu
  • Delivers Taumata/Level 1 and Taumata/Level 2 of Ngā Taumata o Te Ahu o te Reo Māori
  • Delivery begins Saturday 22 February and ends Thursday 11 June
  • Participant commitment varies based on cohort location selected.  See Delivery components for further details
  • Registrations close on Friday 8 February, 5.00pm.  If maximum capacity has been reached, we will close registrations earlier.

Delivery areas

Te Ahu o te Reo Māori ki Ngāi Tahu is delivered in four cohort locations:

  • Ōtautahi – Christchurch
  • Arowhenua – Temuka
  • Ōtākou – Otago
  • Murihiku – Invercargill  

Delivery components

Ōtautahi/Ōtākou

Ōtautahi and Ōtākou participant commitment requires 110 hours (80 hours face to face including school holidays 30 hours self-directed). This will be made up of the following components:

Noho marae: marae stay

Two intensive noho marae are run for each cohort in Ōtautahi and Ōtākou and one three-day class. The sustained immersion builds confidence and forms strong relationships. The dates for the noho marae/daily classes/graduation are:

Arowhenua and Murihiku participant commitment requires 102 hours (72 hours face to face including school holidays 30 hours self-directed).

A full day of induction for all participants will be held on a Saturday 22 February. The day will provide a full presentation of the programme/workshop lessons to give a taste of how the learning will take place.

This will be followed by

  • 7 three hour evening classes. 
  • 2 day workshop (during the school holidays)
  • 6 three hour evening classes
  • Graduation day

To maximise the learning and ensure course completion, participants are expected to attend and/or complete all delivery components of Te Ahu o te Reo Māori ki Ngāi Tahu. Venues for face to face delivery components will be confirmed after registrations close.
