North Porirua, Aotea — Future schooling provision
We’ve been working with Aotea residents to look at future roll numbers in the northern Porirua area.
About the review
Populations can change, and we regularly monitor schools rolls to ensure school networks have the capacity to meet potential demand.
Roll growth is putting pressure on the southern fringe of the Northern Porirua schooling area affecting Papakowhai and Rangikura primary schools in particular. Roll growth in the area is likely to continue because of the ongoing Aotea Block development plan.
We’re working with these 2 schools to alleviate the immediate pressure they're facing.
The aim is for the Porirua education system to be a great example of students being able to access 21st century education in an innovative learning environment.
We understand from the community and schools that there are a range of complex issues impacting the provision of education for Porirua.
The Porirua City Council, schools leaders and other community leaders have said they’re willing to work together to address these issues.
The Minister has asked Ngāti Toa and and the Council, with support from the Ministry, to engage with their communities across the City and to develop a long term area strategy and implementation plan.
Our review process
We use a range of information including our own roll numbers and data from Statistics New Zealand and other local authorities.
Decisions are based on evidence and we value input from schools, parents and the wider community.
We asked for feedback on the following options:
Strengthen provision for Year 7-8 at Aotea College, by changing some or all of the northern area primary schools to Year 1-6 and creating Year 7-13 provision at Aotea College
Strengthen provision for Year 1-8, by creating a new primary school or by creating a second campus of Papakowhai School to meet growth in the south of the Aotea Block. This could be located either:
Other options the community may identify in response to this initial feedback round.
Aotea residents are waiting to hear the outcome of consultations about roll numbers in the northern Porirua area, and we appreciate their patience.
We'll contact northern Porirua schools, the Porirua City Council and the Aotea Residents Association as soon as we have an update.
