Education officers in the youth courts

Education officers are Ministry staff who attend youth courts. The Ministry provides education officers to the youth courts in:

  • Christchurch
  • Porirua
  • Hutt Valley
  • Wellington
  • Auckland
  • Waitakere
  • Manukau
  • Hamilton
  • Rotorua.

The education officer's role is to:

  • provide timely, useful and accurate information about a young person’s education status for the youth court
  • help address a young person’s education needs
  • assist the family group conference coordinator determine whether a more detailed education assessment is required
  • assist the young person to re-engage in education or vocational training (if suitable).

Education reports

The Ministry also provides education reports on young people appearing before a youth court in:

  • Tauranga
  • Dunedin
  • Invercargill
  • Hastings
  • North Shore
  • Whangarei
  • Gisborne.

An education report gives the youth courts timely, useful and accurate information about a young person’s education status. It helps the youth court address the young person’s educational needs.
